Java Location Services: Working to Bring GeoSpatial Technology to the InternetBy Carl Reed - article first appeared at Sun's Java Location Services web portalExamples of "GeoJava" Applications There are numerous examples of the use of Java in a variety of geospatial application areas. The market area that may experience the greatest growth in the development, use, and deployment of Java components, servets, applets, etc. is the rapidly growing phenomenon called Application Service Providers, or ASPs. ASPs provide some form of service, usually under some form of contract, offering to deploy, host, manage, rent, or transact access to an application from some centrally managed facility. ASP’s are application-centric, focused on "selling" application access. They tend to be centrally managed and provide a "one to many" service architecture. By extending the definition a bit, an ASP can also provide applets on demand. In this scenario, applets are downloaded to the client on demand. Some transaction or subscription fee is charged for this service. Java is critical to providing this type of ASP service, especially when the examples given below are considered. While specific ASP implementations could be discussed, a more global market view is given. Contents:
