WebMapping - Centers For Disease Control and Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and West Virginia University have released the first national atlas of heart disease mortality among women.

The cardiovascular health atlas published by the CDC is an excellent example of Arc IMS in action. the site is very appealing and offers a GUI where visitors can easily access data pertaining to county patterns of heart disease death rates among women.

Users are prompted to click on a state of choice. You can then select the racial or ethnic group for which you would like to see a map of county heart disease death rates. As an example I chose the Florida, Black women option. I was quickly presented with a thematic map titled "FLORIDA, Black Women Ages 35+ Heart Disease Death Rates, 1991-1995" (shown below). Maps shown depict spatially smoothed, age-adjusted, average annual death rates per 100,000 women.

In addition to the maps and data available at this site, there are also a number of health reports, graphs, tables, papers, statistics, and weblinks available. Note, the entire atlas is also available for download in PDF format.
