GIS and Markets Opportunities Report

Daratech Inc. of Cambridge Mass has recently released an analysis of the GIS industry which identifies opportunities, markets, and emerging applications. The study, published early in 2000, profiles 7 "high flying" companies and examines some 37 GIS vendors and over 175 products. The detailed report is available from Daratech (www.daratech.com).

GIS Markets and Opportunities analyzes the structure and composition of the GIS market and reveals how participants can make the most of the many opportunities open to them. This is the only up-to-date report on GIS available that examines market structure and user needs in conjunction with current and future technology trends, going beyond definitions to investigate opportunities in the context of product positioning and marketing issues.

Some of the more interesting figures to come out of the study are as follows:

  • GIS software growth was 12.9% in 1999
  • Worldwide software revenues over $845 million
  • World Leaders in the industry are ESRI(35%), Intergraph(28%), MapInfo(6%), Autodesk(5%), and Smallworld(4%) - (denotes % of total software sales)
  • ESRI and Intergraph account for 63/4% of software revenues
  • ESRI's software revenues for 1999 are estimated at $296.6 million

The study points out vertical market strengths of the leaders as:
  • ESRI- federal agencies, mapping org's, retail business, and local government
  • Intergraph - government, transportation, utilities, and communications
  • MapInfo - location based solutions for the customer relationship management (CRM) market

The report background document has some interesting numbers and promises to provide a detailed synopsis of how traditional GIS users are leveraging their investments through integration of GIS with a variety of corporate information systems. Once promising outcome of the report that got my attention was the fact that the report confirms what I believe, and that is that the web has introduced data analysis and geo-spatial information to a vast audience of potentially hundreds of thousands of new users. Lets all keep our fingers crossed!
