A primer on E 9-1-1

e911 Around The Web
A quick search around the web revealed some updates of what the industry's leaders are doing to address e911 issues and concerns.

Sirf -- SiRF Technology, Inc. develops and markets semiconductor and software products that are designed to enable location awareness in high-volume mobile consumer devices and commercial applications. The SiRFLoc architecture, with multi-mode, client-server capabilities, is designed for the wireless carrier deployment of GPS enabled location technology.

Lucent -- Xmarc, Inc. and Lucent Public Safety Systems recently announced a complementary technology agreement to develop PSMap(TM), a centrally based mapping service for wireless E9-1-1.

PSMap will deliver reliable and accurate maps to the nation's public safety call centers -- or Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) -- assisting them in meeting the challenges of responding to wireless E9-1-1 calls. Lucent Public Safety Systems (LPSS) plans to offer this nationwide to public safety call centers beginning in 2001.

Qualcomm -- -- QUALCOMM's gpsOne position location technology merges GPS satellite and network information with highly sophisticated SnapTrack wireless location technology to provide a high-availability solution that offers industry-leading accuracy and performance. Using enhanced signal processing to overcome the limitations of other GPS systems, especially in urban canyon and indoor environments, the gpsOne solution exceeds the Federal Communications Commission's mandate requiring wireless operators to provide the location of cellular 9-1-1 calls (E-911) to emergency call centers.

SnapTrack -- SnapTrack utilizes a DSP software-based receiver solution in conjunction with a location server. The location server processes the satellite data and also performs "altitude aiding" against a terrain elevation database for improved reliability and accuracy. Utilizing SnapTrack technology within a handset minimally affects the cost of the handset while improving location search accuracy and performance. Carriers can deploy SnapTrack with no modification to the existing network allowing them to meet E911 requirements with an acceptable future upgrade path. SnapTrack is a wholly owned subsidiary of QUALCOMM Incorporated and is focused on integrating GPS and two-way wireless technologies.

Wireless Enhanced 9-1-1 from XYPoint -- XYPoint (who claims to be the largest provider of wireless E9-1-1 services in the United States, with over three million subscribers located in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington) provides PSAP's with the cell site location, 10-digit call back number, name of the wireless carrier, community or neighborhood call origination, and emergency responder data critical to finding callers in distress. Their platform includes duplicate hardware and software configurations (for backing up components in case of failure) residing at XYPOINT data centers in Seattle, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona.

SignalSoft -- SignalSoft Corp.'s Wireless 9-1-1 provides wireless network operators with a simple solution for routing distressed wireless callers to emergency assistance. The solution meets FCC phase I and II requirements, automatically locating wireless callers and connecting them with the correct Public Safety Answering Point.

NENA - National Emergency Number Association -- NENA is devoted to 9-1-1 exclusively and many standards and process originate in their committees and workgroups. NENA has a dedicated section titled "The Wireless 9-1-1 Web Page"... be sure to view the e911 checklist!
