GIS Day around the web
GIS Day took place on Tuesday, November 15. The GeoCommunity relayed a number of news stories
from Companies planning GIS Day events and received a number of comments from our readers explaining what they had planned for the day.
Here's a summary of feedback we received.
GIS Day Discussions -
A number of individuals used the GeoCommunity discussion area to talk about their GIS day activities. Here's a few examples
of some of the threads that appeared in the boards. If you would like to share your GIS Day story, we encourage you to
post a brief message stating what you did, how many people you exposed to GIS via your GIS Day project, and leave a website
url if applicable. Here's what some GIS community visitors had to say:
- GIS Day in Springfield, IL went very well. It was held in the rotunda of the State
Capitol building and the turnout was great. People of all ages and backgrounds
browsed through the various tables and exhibits, with a healthy interest in the
workings of GIS quite evident. At our table, the Illinois State Library, we gave out
much more literature then we initially anticipated. I had to return to the library
several times for more supplies! There was also a good deal of networking
between GIS folks in government, private industry, and students. Hopefully this
will lay the groundwork for many worthwhile projects! - T. Huber, Illinois
- We were the only GIS Day event in Tasmania(Australia). We held a Beer and Pizza
Lunch celebrating GIS Day.
Many explainatory GIS posters, and examples of GIS at work were displayed. GIS
was discussed at a relaxed and informative level. It was quite sucessful. Three
complete GIS Teams from different corporations attended, aswell as nearly twice
as many GIS Virgins.
There were many comments, that the event should be conducted at more regular
intervals in future.
- M. Browne, Tasmania
- This was our second GIS Day. We donned our GIS T-shirts for the event. Today
also was student intern day at our county and it added to their tour. We filled our
bulletin board with previous projects and displayed the theme "From the world, to
the country to the state to the county" including a printed color map of each. We
quized the students on certain digital aerials asking them to identify for example a
ski slope and the new Walmart distribution center.

- Colorado State University is having a GIS Open House on Main Campus at the
Student Center. Researchers and students from different Departments have put
together posters to present during the Poster Session on 16 Nov.
My poster will display GIS Applications used in Atmospheric Science.
- K. Dean, Colorado
- This year's GIS day was really a very special occasion for the University Putra
Malaysia (UPM) where I am a faculty member. We organized the Geoinformation
2000 conference, which is an annual national conference in Malaysia,on the 6th
and 7th of November 2000.
This was the first time that the conference was held in UPM and it had the highest
number of registered participants, 230 in all, compared to the previous
conferences. We had 63 papers and we are now busy preparing the final draft of
the proceedings. If you are interested to order a copy of the proceedings, send an
e-mail to me. Please feel free to browse our web page at
http://gis.eng.upm.edu.my/geo2000 .All in, I believe this year conference was a big boost for GIS in Malaysia.
