ArcView Tip - How can I Hot Link a Dbase file to a feature in a View?
  • Add the Dbase file (dbf), that you want to use for linking, to your Project as a Table.
  • Open up the Attribute Table of the point theme in the View.
  • Start Editing the Attribute Table and add a new String field.
  • For each record that you want to have linked, type in the name of the Dbase file in the new String field (example: demog.dbf). Once the Dbase file has been added to the desired records stop editing the Attribute Table and save your edits.

    It is now necessary to enable the Hot Link.

  • Make the View active and choose Theme - Properties from the Menu bar.
  • In the Theme Properties select the Hotlink icon.
  • Select the new String field name that you just created in the Attribute Table in the "Field:" line.
  • Under "Predefined Action:" select "Link to Document" and then click OK.

    Now you can use the Hot Link Tool to link the Dbase file to any point in your View. You can link other Dbase files to different records in the point theme by repeating the procedure with each of the Dbase files.

    AutoCAD 2000 Tip - Using ArcView Files in AutoCAD Map 2000
    Make sure that the ArcView shape/dbf files are named to 8.3 conventions and that there are no dashes in the name. Replace the dash (-) with an underscore (_). Map does not like dashes with dbf files although ArcView doesn't care.
