SPATIAL WEBMASTER TIPS

Every month in this column I give away some of my secrets. This month I share "secrets" pertaining to changing jobs and relocation!

As you are most likely aware, we live in a very mobile economy nowadays... Many people are changing jobs, starting new businesses, or relocating to improve their lifestyle. Before you decide to relocate there are some things you can do to ensure you are making a wise choice.

- Conduct a Salary Survey Analysis revealing range minimums, means, medians, job descriptions, and starting salaries

- Check out Salary Reviews. Review first year, entry level "median" salaries

- Before you relocate be sure to check out the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for that area.

- Use a Salary Calculator. Salary calculators are very handy and are used to compare the cost of living between cities. Enter your current salary and specify where you want to move. You will be shown a salary that you would have to earn in order to maintain a comparible life style.

- If you require US Immigration information or are interested in Canada/US business relations the best location to start is Joseph Grasmick's website. He's an immigration lawyer and serves up some of the best free advice I've seen anyplace. Also, if you're a Canadian and are planning on working in the US or an American employer considering hiring a Canadian, contact me (Glenn) perhaps I can offer up some first hand experience!

- Did you know that Geographers (having a degree in Geography or an equivalent amount of experience) qualify under the NAFTA agreement and are eligible to apply for a TN Visa, enabling them to work in the US, Canada, or Mexico. The TN Visa is good for one year and is renewable. Canadian Geographers may also qualify for an H1 Visa, enabling them to work in the US for 3 years.

We maintain pointers to all of these resources in our Geo-Career Section at http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/classifieds/ in the Job Resources Page
