GIS Day Update

Here's the latest GIS Day News from ESRI. You can find out all about GIS Day by visiting www.gisday.com.

GIS Day CD #3 is now available on the web site at http://www.gisday.com/gisday/material.html This CD contains all the previous material that was found on disks 1 and 2, as well as some new material to help you make your GIS Day a huge success.

To help you plan a successfull event, here's some advice ESRI has listed on contacting local media to promote your event:
  • For daily publications, plan on sending the release about two weeks prior to your event.
  • For weekly publications, you will want to send it about four weeks prior to your event.
  • Address your press release to the city editor, business reporter, or education reporter of a newspaper or the assignment editor of your local television station.
  • Call the person to whom you sent the press release about one week prior to your event. Be brief, and try to avoid using technical jargon.
  • You may have press contacts who have covered your organization in the past. It is always helpful to have a previous connection. If applicable, enlist the help of your public information officer or public relations department. They will have press contacts who you can use.
  • If you attract a major figure to your event as a visitor or speaker, you may want to include this person's name in your press release.
Also included in the new material, is a document describing the GIS involvement in the Census 2000, and the ArcVoyageur download with over 50 meg of carefully selected data. Here's a complete description of the contents of the latest GIS Day CD:
  • ArcExplorer Download
  • ArcVoyager Download

With the combined efforts of all registered GIS Day participants, the goal of educating one million children on GIS Day '99 has been reached. As of late your pledges for children was over 1,050,000 and the total for adults over 785,000. Both totals combined add up to almost 2 million people to be educated on November 19, 1999!

If you know of, or plan on hosting a GIS Day Event, please forward the details including date, location, and web site to editor@geocomm.com We'll do our best to help get the word out about your event.
