GIS Education
We've been continually adding GIS Education resources to our website!
We recently added a listing of colleges and univerisities that offer graduate and post-graduate studies in GIS and related disciplines.
In addition to this, we've been locating Free on-line GIS, CAD, GPS and related tutorials that will allow you to do some extra studying from home without having to leave your PC
you'll find these resources at http://www.geocomm.com/links/education/index.html
GIS Education Hot Site!

The Institute for Geoinformatics, University of Münster, Germany has an extensive ArcView tutorial available in English and German.
The tutorial is for private use only and not all the pages are translated into English at the time of writing.
The tutorial is well laid out and easy to navigate. The authors have provided a glossary or terms, 12 chapters of materials with numerous
image shots and examples, sample exercises (German only), and hints.
Experienced ArcView users will likely not get allot out of this tutorial, however, it's an excellent resource for anyone needing a good primer
to get them up and running with ArcView.
Geography and on-line Resource from the U.B.C

Another Educational Resource recently added to our listings is a site called Geography and on-line resources, by B. Klinkenberg, of
the Dept. of Geography, University of B.C. This is essentially the home of severla advanced Geography courses, however, when you start to look deep into
the contents you realize that there is a wealth of information and useful resources contained in this website.
The author has categorized the site by course number, each course then detailing specific projects, resources, references, websites and much more.
As an aid to students, the instructors have provided pointers to data sets, tutorials, faq's, reference books, and an on-line bulletin board.
This site would be very useful for those of you who like large links pages to tons of resources. You'll also find pointers to data if you happen to be a data hound, particularly
interesting is the large number of pointers to free Canadian data which is often very difficult to locate. Geography educators will find that this is an excellent example of
how to build a useful website that students will definitely find useful.
Some other international GIS Education resources we've located include:
On-Line GPS from the University of Alberta

Jeff Thurston of the Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta has developed an on-line GPS course which
will be introduced in November of this year. Course notes will be made available in PDf format at the start of each week.
Additional resources for students include papers, conferencing, a glossary, tools, weblinks, and a self test.
Using SDTS Data
Almost every day at The GeoCommunity we receive requests for help in translating SDTS data from the USGS into some other format.
There are some excellent commercial translators around that will do this, like the popular FME program from Safe Software,
however, there is much demand for free utilities that can accomplish this. There are utilities out there to do this, however, the process can be somewhat cumbersome.
One resource that may help is a paper called "INTEGRATING SDTS DATASETS INTO GIS PACKAGES FOR THE NOVICE USER" by Shelley L. Silch of the USGS.
You can find this paper at http://software.geocomm.com/downloads/docs/silch_sdtspaper.html hopefully it will help.
Other resources to help you with SDTS data can be found at The GeoCommunity Software/Translators pages at http://software.geocomm.com/translators/index.html
If you maintain or know of any useful on-line GIS educational materials please tell us about it
by emailing to editor@geocomm.com
We'd love to feature your educational resource next month!
