Every month in this column I give away some of my secrets. Not really secrets, but I only share these resources
with selected people... like GeoCommunity visitors! If you manage a website or spend alot of time on-line then the resources that I share with you here
are guaranteed to make your surfing more enjoyable.
Domain Name Lookup
Have you ever wondered if a particular url is still up for grabs?
Well, there's a very simple way you to not only find out if it's available, but you can also find out who owns a particular url as well.
This handy form provided by Virtual Promote asks you to simply
provide a value for a domain name, including its extension (i.e., ".com", ".co.uk", etc.).
A query on the appropriate WHOIS database will be performed and the findings presented to you.
This program currently supports lookups on over 50 Top Level Domains (i.e.,".com", ".uk", ".de", etc.).
Press Release Distribution
If you just launched, redesigned, or made a serious update to your website then you might consider getting the
word out with a news release. This can be a costly process, however, there are ways to do this without spending a dime!
PRWeb has a mechanism for you to upload your news releases for free. Visitors searching their site, using appropriate keywords, will then be presented with your news.
If you have a serious budget and want your news distributed to all the major on-line news feeds, consider posting your release with
PRNewsWire or BusinessWire. Don't forget that SpatialNews is also available to run your news... for free!
Geonet Names Server
I know, this isn't specifically a "webmaster" resources, however, if you maintain a "Geography" or "GIS" focussed website then I'm sure you can make use of this terrific website.
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign
geographic feature names - over 3.5 million records in this database!
