Well, the first official GIS Day has come and gone. We asked GeoCommunity visitors to tell us about their GIS Day activities.
We had many replies, sorry we couldn't post all of them! Here's what some of you did - thanks to all who replied!
Jennifer Crain, DM Solutions Group
"Our company held an Open House. The turn was about 60 people, 33 of whom
were high school students! Let's just say our 1200 square foot office
was not equipped for that many people at once! At least we had free
food for them (the highlight of their day no doubt). It was rather
crazy. For something we threw together in less than a week's time, it
was very successful. We also had business partners and university
students, and a photographer from Carleton University's Alumni
Magazine. Fitting because most of our employees are Carleton U. grads."
Julie L. Gainey, Marketing Coordinator AGRA Baymont, Inc.
"In conjunction with GIS Day 1999, AGRA Baymont is proud
to present this Frequently Asked Questions area on the
company website. The FAQ is intended to address data
conversion questions within the Automated Mapping,
Facilities Management, Geographic Information Systems
(AM/FM/GIS) industry. Please submit your questions and anticipate a prompt
response from our experts. Your question will be
evaluated for placement on the FAQ list. "
Xu-Feng Hu, Halifax, N.S.
"After my computer sciences courses in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I drove almost
2 hours to COGS in Lawrencetown for the GIS day. The reason I went there
is to meet the head of the center and some specialists, and try to have
them accept my admmision into the GIS/RS progam in the middle of this
year's session. When I was there, the circumtances over there were so much
exciting, that made me more decided that I should be/like to be there with
them. I suppose to stay there for one hour, but it turned out that I
was there for 3 hours..."
Joseph J. Kerski, Geographer - Education Outreach USGS
"For GIS Day here at the USGS Rocky Mountain Mapping Center in Denver, we
hosted several tours of our building - it is the repository for all USGS products,
containing 50,000,000 maps, books, CDs, and posters, and is the production facility for
much of the DEMs and topographic maps. The National Ice Core Laboratory and the Rock
Core Research Center are in the building as well. Quite a place! We conducted presentations
throughout the day on the use of GIS in education and in various USGS research projects,
including abandoned mine lands, Front Range Infrastructure Resources, Middle Rio Grande
Basin, and the US-Mexico Transboundary project. I taught an ecology class at the University of
Northern Colorado using GIS with elk radio collar data in Rocky Mountain National Park and some
AIDS data. Finally, we participated in a kickoff of a new science education masters program
at the University of Colorado at Denver by hosting an exhibit with curriculum materials for
the nearly 1,000 teachers who attended. GIS will be a big part of this education masters program."
David A. Cobb, Harvard Map Collection
The Harvard Map Collection hosted a series of seminars throughout the day. "...Our intent was to introduce GIS to those unfamiliar with the technology and
have the day progress with more information, discussion of specific
applications, and presentations describing the use of GIS technology in
selected Harvard departments. This first GIS Day was a resounding success as 181 persons attended our
seven sessions and we are looking forward to celebrating GIS Day II in 2000."
