FEATURE ARTICLE - The GeoCommunity
If this is your first issue of SpatialNews I would like to
welcome you. I am pleased to announce that we are now
reaching over 5000 gis professionals world-wide every month.
A special welcome goes out to the 1,500+ people who
subscribed to the newsletter by visiting us at the GeoComm
booth at the ESRI user conference in San Diego. It was
great to finally meet some of you face to face! Also, if you
received a GeoCommunity or DataDepot T-shirt I hope you're
showing it off to all your co-workers!
A couple of weeks ago we "threw the switch" (so to speak)
and launched our new web site at http://www.geocomm.com
-
The GeoCommunity. When you visit the GeoCommunity you will
find the GISDataDepot and the SpatialNews websites, along
with some new features as well, all conveniently accessible
from one central location or GIS Portal.
We're still ironing out the wrinkles out and I'm almost
relocated to Florida, where I'll be working on SpatialNews
and the GeoCommunity full time. Your comments, feedback, or
opinions are always welcome.
GEO-SEARCH ENGINE
One feature that we at GeoComm are particularly excited
about is our revolutionary GIS or "Geo" Search Engine. When
you use our search utility you will be presented with 2
options. Search the GeoCommunity, which searches the 70,000+
html documents under the geocomm domain; or search GIS web
sites on the Internet - make sure your website is listed in
our directory!
We are encouraging you and anyone else who has a geo or GIS
related website to submit your url to our search engine in
order to add to the most comprehensive and accurate industry
specific search engine on the web.
You can access the search engine from any page on the
website at http://www.GeoComm.com
or go directly to
http://search.geocomm.com
Why search Yahoo or any of the other large engines out there
only to have to sift through hundreds of inaccurate results
or click on what seems to be the perfect hit only to find
another broken link!
Let me offer you a brief tour of The GeoCommunity:
We have established 4 main sections of the website, although
there is so much content we could have easily built 10 or 12
main headings. All content is available at www.GeoComm.com,
however, we are actually using several domains to provide
for substantial growth.
DATA: http://data.geocomm.com
The heart of the site is the Freely downloadable data
formerly hosted at the GISDataDepot. You can get there
directly at http://data.geocomm.com
Begin your search by clicking on the first letter of the
country name and then work your way down to more detailed
data stored by State, and County. You will find all the DRGs
for the US and many DOQs (these are being added as they
become available). Look for more Canadian data to be added
shortly and keep us in mind if you have any public domain
non-copyright data that you would like to make publicly
available from our server.
NEWS: http://news.geocomm.com
News is available in what else, the Spatial News section at
http://news.geocomm.com We're
still moving content over from
the old SpatialNews domain, but look for regularly posted
industry news and press releases, product and data reviews,
archived newsletters, extensive GIS conference and event
listings http://news.geocomm.com/events/, and a section to
post or browse free Classified ads
http://news.geocomm.com/classifieds/
Our latest feature news is from the ESRI user conference and
can be found at: http://news.geocomm.com/esri_uc/
FORUM: http://forum.geocomm.com
We've taken the temporary discussion forum that was located
at SpatialNews.com, built our own utilities, and made
available several Discussion Forums. We currently categorize
the forums as Data, Software, and Hardware, but we are open
to creating new categories as required. Feel free to use
these utilities when your looking for pointers or whish to
share some knowledge that you posses. You can find the
forums at http://forum.geocomm.com
SOFTWARE: http://software.geocomm.com
This is where we are providing access to free software and
other utilities. If you have a free download or a trial
version that you would like listed on this page please let
us know. We'll host the download for you or provide a
pointer to your website where the download and other
documentation can be accessed.
The GeoCommunity is a gathering place for GIS professionals
or anyone seeking GIS or Geospatial information or
resources. We encourage feedback and welcome the opportunity
to serve up data, post news, provide pointers to your
products or services, or promote a paper or article that you
have authored.
We hope you find the site a useful resource. We currently
have over 1,000 GIS related websites listed on our links
page at http://www.geocomm.com/links/
You can list your site here by emailing to
submitsite@geocomm.com
Everything on the site is free - the only people that pay
for anything are our sponsors!
