German based company alta4 announces release of ImageMapper
1.1a. ImageMapper is a new ArcView GIS Extension designed
for small and medium size internet GIS projects. ImageMapper
lets you convert your ArcView Views into clickable html-maps
in just a few seconds. ImageMapper provides an easy one step
dialog, there's no programming required. As a pure HTML
solution, ImageMapper is cross platform and fully compatible
with any web server and browser. Sensitive elements can be
point, line and polygon features. Version 1.1a features
automatic display of results in default browser.

And, more recently from alta4:
First week of August alta4 sold a site license of
ImageMapper 1.1a to the USGS Wetlands Research Center, Baton
Rouge,LA.

"We see this as a major break through in our efforts to move
from the German/European market to the American one. Further
development of the software is underway. We'll shortly be
inviting users to beta-test the new version. The development
will be even more towards providing a full interface between
ArcView and HTML and the Internet."

ESRI Conference News:

If you didn't already know, ESRI held their 19th annual user
conference in San Diego, CA. During the last week of August.
I had the pleasure of attending this event - my first ESRI
UC and I'm already looking forward to  next year's
conference. The event attracted over 9000 attendees,
featured over 700 paper presentations, exhibited over 200
vendor and demonstration booths, not to mention the map
gallery taking up the same area as a football field,
technical workshops, special interest groups, commercially
hosted parties, a kids camp and much more - this event is
HUGE! Anyone who is unaware of the tremendous impact ESRI
and GIS in general is having on our lives should attend an
ESRI UC at least once. Be prepared to be blown-away by an
awe-inspiring showcase of almost 10,000 GISers like the
event that I was exposed to.

Our ESRI conference highlights are available at :

Industry news releases announced at the conference are at:

ArcInfo 8
Perhaps the most dramatic part of the conference was when
ArcInfo 8 was introduced (to a thunderous rendition of the
theme from "2001 Space Odyssey". According to ESRI, ArcInfo
8 has been completely redesigned and reengineered to be
fast, easy, and powerful (much emphasis was placed on the
ease of use). There are over 400 person years of time
invested in its development - more than twice the time that
went into the creation of the MS Office suite!

ArcInfo 8 is the first package in ESRI's ArcGIS suite of
products.
Key Features:
~ A new user interface accessed by 3 applications - data,
maps, tools
~ ArcMap application is where users will query, display, and
analyze data
~ ArcCatalog - this is the data-centric application that
locates, browses, and manages your spatial data.
~ ArcToolbox - over 120 tools, each having a menu driven
interface, complete with wizards
~ Geodatabase - this is a new object oriented data model
implemented on standard relational databases with the Arc
SDE server. The personal version of the SDE runs on
Microsoft's Jet Database Engine which is standard with
Arc 8.
~ Multi-user editing - simultaneous access and editing of
coverages is enabled(we saw a cool demo of this which was
managed very well)
~ ESRI has worked closely with ERDAS to develop tools that
reproject on the fly (I know this has been on peoples wish
list for a long time)
~ New geostatistics incorporated for advanced spatial
modeling.

Also, back by popular demand, look for printed manuals to be
shipped with this release!

ArcView 3.2
For those of you, like me, who are still impressed with the
excellent upgrade that was found in ArcView 3.1 last year,
hold on ArcView 3.2 is now out. Numerous improvements have
been made to the product as well as the addition of numerous
new features. Here's what you can expect:
~ A projection utility for shapefiles (this has been a long
time coming!)
~ Updated report writing with Crystal Reports 7
~ Support for DXF export
~ SDTS data import utility
~ CAD reader compatible with ACAD 2000 Connectivity to any
ODBC compliant database
~ Improved SDE database access
~ Updated ESRI Data & Maps

Since data is such a hot issue to many of us, lets look at
the updates that are found in the new data and maps:
~ Updated 5 digit 1999 zip code polygons and points
~ Updated GDT Dynamap/2000 roads file
~ Updated GDT major water bodies file
~ Updated GDT Dynamap landmark data which includes parks,
transportation facilities, institutions, airports, and
retail centers.
~ Area code boundaries
~ 1995 municipal boundaries
~ Ecological regions
~ WorldSat 4km satellite imagery

ArcIMS
Another product soon to be released by ESRI is ArcIMS 3.0.
For many people at the conference, particularly those hooked
on web applications and web mapping, the release of ArcIMS
3.0 is even more exciting then the release of ArcInfo 8.
ArcIMS 3.0 is billed as the next generation Internet Mapping
and distributed technology. Jack Dangermond, president ESRI,
sees this as an opportunity of opening up new ways of
cooperation and a means of leveraging the vast amount of
existing data contained in GIS databases worldwide.

Model Builder for ArcView
ArcView model builder is expected to be released later in
the summer. This extension provides ArcView users with
beginner and advanced wizard driven modeling tools. Models
can be defined, saved and rerun and extensions allow users
to share their models with others. Models included
permit modeling of GIRD, DEM, terrain analysis, hill
shading, buffering, overlays and more. Extensive help is
offered throughout the modeling process and documentation is
automatically created throughout the process.

GDT & ESRI collaborate
One IMS application that I'm sure you'll be hearing about in
the future is a collaboration by GDT and ESRI to create an
online Spatial Data Maintenance Program for local government
agencies.

Community Update will give local providers free access to
GDT's database over the internet. The agencies then can add
new features and attribute data and then resubmit to GDT
directly. GDT staff will then validate the information and
make the appropriate enhancements. The revised data is
then returned over the internet to the agencies where they
can then use the data free of charge.
