SPATIAL WEBMASTER TIPS

Every month in this column I give away some of my secrets. Not really secrets, but I only share these resources with selected people... like SpatialNews subscribers! If you manage a website or spend alot of time on-line then the resources that I share with you here are guaranteed to make your surfing alot easier.

Deja News http://www.deja.com
Newsgroups are perhaps the most up-to-date and content specific source of information that you can find on the web. If you have a problem with something and need a quick reply then newsgroups are for you. Postings are almost immediate, and replies come just as fast. Generally, newsgroups are categorized by discipline, some of them being fairly broad in nature (ie. Geology) and others are very specific (ie. Autodesk Mapguide). Some lists are moderated, others are not. Generally you're on your own as far as what you post, however, you better follow the guide lines and keep to the general topic of the group otherwise you will be flamed (ie. you'll get alot of hate email!).

What is very attractive about newsgroups is that the content is "pulled" from the list by you rather than the messages being "pushed" onto you, such as when you join a mailing list. You don't have to worry about your mail box filling up with hundreds of emails every day. This is wher Deja News comes in handy. Deja provides a nice web interface where you can search for newsgroups based on discipline, subscribe to the newsgroup(s) of your choice, and finally post threads to the group. When someone replies to your thread, you are notified by email. If your really keen, Deja News has even developed a mechanism for you to start your own Communities where you determine the topic of discussion.

Here are some of the "geo" newsgroups that I subscribe to:
alt.architecture
alt.cad.autocad
alt.computer.consultants.ads
alt.planning.urban
autodesk.autocad.r14general
autodesk.autocadmap.general
autodesk.mapguide.general
comp.cad.pro-engineer
comp.infosystems.gis
comp.soft-sys.gis.esri
sci.geo.geology
sci.geo.satellite-nav
