Census 2000 Data Capture Center at Census Bureau's National Processing Center
The Commerce Department's Census Bureau opened the second of four data capture centers here on July 29, this one at its existing National Processing Center

Largest GIS Conference Ever!
With more than 9,000 attendees, ESRI's 1999 International
User Conference, held July 26-30, broke another attendance record making it the
largest geographic information system (GIS) gathering ever.

Microsoft Agrees to Acquire Visio as Part of Mission To Increase Productivity for Businesses
Microsoft Corp. announced it has agreed to acquire Visio Corp., the leading
supplier of enterprise-wide business diagramming and technical drawing software, furthering Microsoft's mission of increasing productivity for businesses large
and small - and their knowledge workers - worldwide.

Images from Landsat 7
After soaring to space last spring, NASA's latest Earth-imaging satellite has
completed its checkout phase and is now "open for business." New images from the
Landsat 7 spacecraft are now available for viewing and purchase by scientific
researchers and the general public via the Internet from the United States
Geological Survey (USGS) and NASA.

Geo Fun!
The Geocommunity launched a "fun" section for geographers and visitors to The
GeoCommunity website. The rec room is a fun place for visitors to kick back and
try their luck at a variety of games, contest, and trivia.

Free Maps of Britain
Free Ordnance Survey maps of Britain which can be searched by place names,
postcodes and National Grid references are now available on the Internet - and
users can take extracts for use on their own web sites without charge.

Geologic Data Explorer on the web
The USGS Energy Resources Program has developed the Geo-Data Explorer (GEODE)
http://dss1.er.usgs.gov, an interactive program that makes available, over the Internet, various map
coverages and datasets that can be used for decision making on energy and related
land-management issues. This system can integrate various databases from USGS scientific
investigations with state-of-the-art digital and Internet capabilities to provide
scientific decision support. The system is designed to consist of comprehensive
National geospatial coverage and Internet accessibility for rapid analysis of emerging
issues. The GEODE includes capabilities for user-driven GIS (geographic information system) mapping and
user-defined queries of coverages and active databases that are linked from many sources.
