Here is the latest GIS Day News from ESRI and a listing of some of the GIS Day Activities that have been planned. The Goal of GIS Day is to reach at least 1,000,000 people and introduce them to the powers of GIS. You can find out all about GIs Day by visiting www.gisday.com.

To date, over 1,000 organizations have registered to host a GIS Day event on Friday, November 19.
The State of Oklahoma has declared GIS Day
In Kentuky the Governor has declared GIS Day
Maricopa County (Arizona) Board of Supervisors has proclaimed November 19, 1999, as "Maricopa County GIS Day."
The mayor of The City of Phoenix has declared an official GIS Day
Here are description of just a few GIS Day events happening everywhere.

A GIS user in Washington, D.C., is teaching his daughter's Brownie Troop to give a GIS demo using ArcExplorer (free downloadable GIS software) so they can go into their classrooms on GIS Day and demonstrate GIS for their class.

The Department of Energy Federal Energy Technology Center is coordinating six or more organizations that use GIS to set up their demonstration in their local mall for the day.

Bistate Regional Planning Commission in Rock Island, Illinois, will host an exhibit of local maps comparing old maps and photos of the area with newer information, along with presentations on GIS and how it affects local residents.

Pierce County GIS in Washington State will be plotting out GIS maps at their local mall along with some of the local school districts who will also be plotting maps and putting them on display.

D.C. Link and Learn, working with National Geographic, ESRI, the Washington GIS Consortium, and the National Capital Planning Commission, will create ten teams of seven high school students to solve "community" problems with government/private industry GIS mentors. These solutions will be demonstrated and displayed at the D.C. Link and Learn event. In addition, a display of "community service" vehicles and equipment will be on display in the Waterside Mall, making a perfect "field trip" experience for area students.

Dane County in Madison, Wisconsin, will host an event in the main entry of the County courthouse along with related displays throughout other departments. The event will include map displays and time lines as well as live computer demonstrations.

The Massachusetts Office of GIS will be sponsoring a map gallery at the State House where Massachusetts State organizations will display maps of their current GIS projects. There will also be an open house at the Massachusetts GIS offices where you can make your own map, go on a GIS-based scavenger hunt, or have a GPS lesson.

Marquette, Michigan, will produce a Web demonstration through the Internet to schools, a public access channel, and the Mining Journal.

The University of Florida, PKY Department at Gainesville, Florida, will be showcasing all the various GIS projects that students prepared throughout the school year. Most of these projects include GIS in conjunction with GPS for environmental science purposes. The students will be taking a field trip to Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and obtain GPS coordinates to perform an environmental site survey of the theme park. This is only one of many different projects that they will be showcasing on GIS Day. For additional information on the various GIS projects that they are undertaking, please refer to the Web site www.pky.ufl.edu/mapping/.

The University of Montana, in cooperation with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Forest Service, and local area businesses, will be hosting an open house at the University of Montana's Missoula campus. There will be a map gallery and several "GIS in use" presentations as well as a hands-on workshop area for the many school children who will be participating in this event.

Says participant Alex Philp, Assistant Director EOS Education Project, The University of Montana, "The NASA Earth Observing System Education Project at the University of Montana is very excited about hosting a "GIS Day" open house. Throughout the day, we will be introducing hands-on GIS to middle and high school students from across Missoula. Simultaneously, the students will learn how GIS is employed across multiple public and private sector arenas in their local community. In the evening, a public night will be filled with poster presentations demonstrating the benefits of GIS in dozens of fields from medicine to resource management. Building upon this years theme of Geography Awareness Week --"Geography and Technology"-- we want to help celebrate the role GIS can play in improving our community and the landscape that surrounds us."

The University of Denver in Colorado will be holding a GIS in Law Enforcement Workshop. Visitors will be able to tour crime mapping lab facilities, view maps made by law enforcement agencies from around the country, and see demonstrations of GIS software used in crime mapping and analysis.

The State of Illinois will host a two-day event in the State Capitol, beginning on Thursday, November 18, 1999, with presentations/demos of GIS applications such as State Police crime analysis, emergency management, etc. The Governor will be in attendance along with the general public and many schools.

The Rotary Club of Manningham in Melbourne, Australia, will be holding a three-day workshop in conjunction with local schools. Forty students will present to parents and representatives from local government.

If you know of, or plan on hosting a GIS Day Event, please forward the details including date, location, and web site to editor@geocomm.com We'll do our best to help get the word out about your event.
